Christmas
Christmas is an annual holiday which is
observed every December 25. This celebrates the nativity of
Jesus Christ. The basis for the Anno Domini method of dating
was said to have happened between 7 and 2 B.C. While December
25 may not be the actual birth date of Jesus of Nazareth, the
date could have been chosen to match up with the Roman Festival
or with the winter solstice.
The modern Christmas holiday includes church
celebrations, gift giving and different decorations which are
commonly made up of the nativity scene, Christmas tree,
Christmas lights and Santa Claus. Father Christmas is also a
term which is used for Santa Claus, although both have
different origins. The modern look of Santa Claus was said to
have been created during the 19th
century.
Christians and non-Christian populace
celebrate Christmas, but it is more considered as a cultural
festival for the latter. Since Christmas involves a lot of
festivities and gift giving, the occasion is a main event for
many sellers.
Christmas is a joint compound of two words
which originally means "Christ’s Mass". The letter X (chi) in
Greek represent the first letter of Christ, it is also the same
as the Roman letter X that was made use of as an abbreviation
of Christ ever since the middle 16th century. Therefore, Xmas
is always used as a short form for Christmas.
